Federal court and state court are two completely different entities. If you are prosecuted in a state court crime, a federal court can prosecute you for the exact same crime, and may impose much harsher penalties, including federal imprisonment. Additionally, at the option of the courts, there is a possibility that an individual can be sentenced to both state and federal prison for the same crime.
Federal laws are generally much more complex than state laws. Federal procedure also varies greatly from state procedure. For example, in state court, if you are arrested and your bail is set at $50,000 and you hire a bail bondsman, you can generally have to pay the bondsman $5,000 in order to be bailed out. However, in federal court, you may not even have to pay any money at all, and, in many cases, the individual may only be required to sign a property lien or personal recognizance to get out. Therefore, it may not end up costing you any up-front payment in order to get out of jail.
